Der japanische Künstler Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) ist vor allem für seine Werke im Genre des so genannten Ukiyo-e bekannt. Es schuf unter anderem die Farbholzschnitte der Serie “36 Ansichten des Berges Fuji”, das auch das berühmte Bild “Die große Welle von Kanagawa” beinhaltet. Zwischen 1796 und 1820 entstanden 30.000 Buchillustrationen und Farbdrucke, die wichtigsten Werke nach seinem 60. Lebensjahr. Viele Impressionisten wie Monet, Degas und Toulouse-Lautrec waren begeisterte Anhänger Hokusais.
